That matters because the usual route is slow. In a 2024 study, the median wait for a new endocrinology appointment in the US was 72 days, more than twice the wait for a cardiologist. TSH is the test most people get, and on its own it can look fine while you don’t. TSH is a signal from your pituitary gland asking the thyroid to work harder. It doesn’t show whether your body is turning T4 into T3, the active hormone, or whether your immune system is attacking the gland.
